This day-long online course has been developed by Sabhal Mòr Ostaig in association with Visit Scotland for professional tourist guides, especially aimed at those working with STGA and HOSTA.  The course will provide an insight into the ongoing relevance of Gaelic to today’s Scotland, with a look into the history of the Gaelic language and culture.  The programme will cover subjects such as Gaelic in the landscape; place name meanings, origins, and pronunciations; the old Gaelic hero legends and where we can find them in throughout Scotland; the status and potential of the Gaelic language today and for the future.  This day course will include a contribution from Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o’ Riches, Scotland’s online resource of audio recordings of the nation’s cultural heritage including access to songs, music, history, poetry, traditions and stories.

Whilst this course is not intended to teach the language itself, the programme will provide an insightful overview of the Gaelic language and culture, with advice on resources to research particular trips or destinations to enable guides to anticipate questions from clients and provide interesting, relevant and accurate information to those participating in trips, as well as dispelling a few myths and stereotypes. There will be an opportunity to ask questions through the day.

This course will run over one day, delivered via Zoom in two parts, from  9:15am to 4:30 pm with breaks.

The event will run twice:-  Friday 10th and Saturday 11th December 2021.

Attendance is limited to 12 spaces on each date.
