The course consists of nine classes over three days (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) with three online classes each day at 09.30 – 10.45, 11.15 – 12.30 and 13.30 – 15.00, all delivered via Zoom. Where possible classes will be limited to 8 students.
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig are delighted to welcome the very talented musician Ewen Henderson back to their Short Course Programme for 2020.
On this course, Ewen will be giving an insight into his own, traditional, Highland style of fiddling with particular reference to the heavy influence of Gaelic song and pipe music on West Highland fiddle playing. There will be the opportunity to learn tunes both old and new as well as to have an in-depth look at how to interpret pipe music on the fiddle, focussing primarily on “light music” but also offering an insight into pìobaireachd playing for the fiddle. As befits this particular musical tradition, most of the tunes and information will be passed on aurally in the classes but sheet music will also be available.
This course is suitable for intermediate to advanced fiddle players, who are able to play a range of tunes at a good pace with some varying bowing and ornamentation techniques. A reasonable knowledge of the various Scottish tune types and comfortable playing in the common keys or above. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own fiddle and the course will be primarily taught through the medium of English.
There’s space for up to 8 people on the course – to ensure your place please book early!
Multi-instrumentalist and singer Ewen Henderson hails from Lochaber and was naturally steeped in the traditional music and Gaelic culture of the area from an early age. He was fortunate enough to have been taught by the legendary Aonghas Grant Snr. on the fiddle and also received tuition on the pipes from a host of top players, including Angus MacColl. Ewen toured the world for several years with folk legends Battlefield Band and World Music pioneers the Afro-Celt Sound-System but now spends most of his time performing with Mànran (the band he co-founded in 2010).
