Gaelic for Irish Speakers (Beginners) – On Campus
**This course is now full; however, it also runs during the week beginning 11th July.**
This course is directed at newcomers and recent beginners to learning Scottish Gaelic, who approach the language as Irish-speakers.
Much of the work at the beginning of the week will be oral and relating to differentiation between Gàidhlig and Gaeilge (i.e. name introduction, place of birth, where they live), all with written confirmation. There will also be an emphasis on pronunciation.
This will be consolidated through correct language structure and grammar at an early level, suitable to the needs of beginners: nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, question words with practical oral and written examples of their use in context. This will move forward at a pace which will be suitable to the students as they progress through the week.
Poetry and prose will be introduced as appropriate to strengthen and broaden vocabulary and terminology. Also, idioms, proverbs, similes are useful in this context.
There will be opportunities in class on a daily basis to converse with one another and use role-play in Gàidhlig, using the language learned in a structured fashion.
This course is supported by the COLMCILLE initiative. Colmcille is a partnership programme between Foras na Gaeilge and Bòrd na Gàidhlig, promoting the use of Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic in Ireland and Scotland and between the two countries. Applications for financial assistance to attend this course can be made by contacting Maolcholuim Scott at Colmcille directly: www.colmcille.net/en/contact/index.php
