This unique course offers informal language learning whilst discovering the ‘real’ Isle of Skye and is ideal for participants who have little or no Gaelic. The course will be partly College-based, and the rest of the time will be spent exploring Skye. In the tutorials, participants will receive a pronunciation workshop, learn basic and useful social phrases, and will cover some simple grammar and language skills. Outwith the classroom, the students will put into practice what they have learnt and build on their knowledge of the Gaelic language each day. As the participants discover Skye’s natural beauty, they will learn the Gaelic and Norse meanings of the Island’s place-names, as well as any stories which might be connected to that area.
Muriel Fisher was brought up in Skye with Gaelic as her first language. Whilst teaching at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig she also teaches Gaelic in the University of Arizona and around the world. In recognition of her lifetime commitment to Gaelic, Muriel was named the 2015 recipient of the “Excellence in Community Linguistics” award from the Linguistic Society of America, for her “outstanding work with the teaching, promotion and documentation of Scottish Gaelic.”
Course participants are expected to be comfortable walking about 2 miles with ease as the excursions are a key aspect of the course. Lunch, Dinner and Refreshments are not included in the price of the course, although breakfast is included if you are staying in our college accommodation.
